Tony Ferguson’s fame did go up after his previous fight at the UFC 274, but not in the way he originally wants it to go up. He lost to Michael Chandler in a most brutal fashion, by a KO with a leg kick to his chin. In the slow-motion video, his face warped to the extent that it looked like a cartoon character. And the public is waiting for such a situation so they can make fun of it. Since then a photo of his warped face is massively used as a meme on the internet.
Tony Ferguson did fight in the welterweight division back in 2011 and to be honest, he is massively better at that division. At least back then he was. In the period from 2009 and up to 2019 he has only one loss. A single loss in 10 years. If that is not impressive I don’t know what is.
Tony Ferguson Will Come Back In UFC But Back At His Own Bodyweight, He’ll Move To Welterweight
El Cucuy says – “I wouldn’t mind going back up to 170. I knocked everybody out up there at 170. This cut to 155 – it’s not too hard, but I lose a lot of muscle mass, man. I fucking hate being skinny like that, I look like a little bitch, I don’t fucking like that. I work my ass off to put on muscle and make sure that I eat right, and I do that – and my pops always told me, ‘Anthony, wrestle at your own bodyweight.’ And I haven’t done that for a while. What I did for the last year and a half was, I just stopped everything and I just paid attention to everything other people were doing…”
After his loss to Michael Chandler, El Cucuy is not aware when he’ll be ready for a return, however, he is certain that he’ll be back. IF not sooner, than later.
“When I’m ready to fight I will let the UFC know, and I guarantee you they’ll let me know, too, ‘Hey, this is who we have.’ I was ready for Islam Makhachev in Abu Dhabi if some things would’ve been a little bit different. But I try to take these opportunities and present them so I’m there for the company. They know I’m a company man, and that’s why they said I’m not going anywhere.” – Ferguson states.
The lightweight went through a significant drop of three places on the official UFC Lightweight rankings after his loss. However, this does not depress and disappoint the stubborn fighter.
His will and determination to succeed is greater than any block that the future might hold for him. Because after all, only the successful are being talked about. And Tony most certainly is great.
