Jake Paul, YouTuber, Disney star, and professional boxer who thus far has only fought basketball players and UFC welterweights, believes he can defeat Canelo Alvarez, one of the greatest boxers alive. Admittedly, Alvarez lost to Dmitry Bivol this weekend, and Paul took to Instagram to gloat, managing to call out UK boxing promoter Eddie Hearn in the process.
“And just like that, ‘Canelo’ Alvarez loses to Dmitry Bivol. An amazing fight by Bivol. I’m two inches bigger than Bivol, 20 pounds heavier. Give me three years, I take out ‘Canelo’ in the same way. He’s on the ropes like he won. He only won three rounds out of the whole entire fight.
Jake Paul: “I’m beating ‘Canelo’ in three f****** years”
Eddie Hearn, f*** you, you can suck my d***. I’m coming, I’m beating ‘Canelo’ in three f****** years. I put that on my mama.”
Eddie Hearn worked closely with Paul to deliver the record-breaking Taylor vs Serrano fight at Madison Square Garden. In the aftermath of said fight, Eddie Hearn told the press that Paul was “deluded” if he thought he could defeat Canelo Alvarez in a boxing match.
Paul made a rare admission that he mostly fights men far smaller than he is, with Paul declaring that he could feasibly defeat Canelo Alvarez.
“Congrats to Dmitry Bivol, he showed that ‘Canelo’ is easily beatable by a bigger man, which is what I’ve known this whole entire time. Believe in yourself kids and don’t listen to these f****** British scumbags like Eddie Hearn.”
Jake Paul has not entered the boxing ring as a fighter since his second victory over Tyron Woodley late last year, which saw Paul defeat the former UFC welterweight champion via knockout. Jake Paul, who stands around six feet tall, and reportedly weighs about two hundred pounds, has made a career habit of fighting smaller men.
His last two opponents, Ben Askren and Tyron Woodley, fought in the UFC at the welterweight limit of 170 pounds, thirty pounds lighter than the YouTuber. At his heaviest, Canelo Alvarez fights as a light heavyweight, which under boxing rules is up to 175 pounds.
Weight divisions in combat sports, of course, exist for a very good reason: larger, heavier opponents tend to have a major advantage over smaller, lighter ones. It’s not unheard of for a smaller opponent to defeat a larger one with superior technique, as Royce Gracie would attest.
Jake Paul’s next opponent is unlikely to be the champ. Tommy Fury, who has fought at two hundred pounds, is reportedly still interested in a Paul fight, and may well offer Jake Paul the chance to box a professional boxer for a change.
Do you think Jake Paul can take out Alvarez, or is this more empty talk? Let us know in the comments.
