Last night in the main event of WWE Hell in A Cell, we saw a performance for the ages. Cody Rhodes would enter the titular match to finish his feud with Seth Rollins, but with the added pressure of a torn pec. The bruising on his chest alone would have many fans feeling uneasy, but Rhodes would power through to complete the match as planned. Now, he’s set to go under the knife – with surgery set for Thursday, June 9th.
Surgery Was Always Going To Come
The surgery date was first reported by Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer. Everyone already knew this was going to happen, but the common opinion around Rhodes wrestling with the injury was that the injury would not get any worse. Things were more down to pain management for Rhodes, and watching the match showed him very rarely using the right arm for offence, and doing very little lifting with it.
The result was one of the most compelling matches in WWE history, and one that will likely go down as a classic. With Rhodes going under the knife on Thursday, we can expect to see him on Monday Night RAW tonight. A promo will likely be cut, and Rollins will come out to beat him down – fully writing Rhodes off TV.
Cody Rhodes Might Well Have Earned The WWE Championship With This Performance
After this incredible performance, fans already know what to expect next from Rhodes once he’s back in the ring. Expected time off for a torn pec is six months, which puts Rhodes in a perfect spot to return and potentially win the 2023 Royal Rumble. He undoubtably won some respect from Vince McMahon for his insane performance, and could have well been promised a big reward for it. Fans should not be surprised if at WrestleMania next year, Rhodes leaves the show with the WWE Championship around his waist.
This performance should not be something that others look to replicate however. Working while injured, even with a minor injury is rarely the right move. Rhodes & Rollins are two of the best in the world, and were able to expertly craft the match around his limitations. Not everyone is skilled enough to wrestle their version of the Michael Jordan flu game.
