Kim Kardashian showed up at the Met Gala last month in Marilyn Monroe’s dress – the one she wore to President John F Kennedy’s 45th birthday. The Fashion icon has now been accused of causing permanent damage to the piece.
Kim Kardashian Made A Mess Of Marylin Monroe’s Iconic Dress
Kim K wore the $4.8 million nude silk gown to walk the red carpet with her boyfriend, Pete Davidson to the MET Gala. When Kim realized during her first fittings that she might be unable to wear the dress as it was not her size and no alterations could be made, she decided to lose weight in order to squeeze into the dress despite criticism from health workers. The Marilyn Monroe dress was bought by Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Museum in 2016 and has never been worn by anyone else until Kim tried it.
Ripley’s shared on Instagram what measures they put in place to preserve the state of the dress. “Great care was taken to preserve this piece of pop culture history. With input from garment conservations, appraisers, and archivists, the garment’s condition was top priority. Believe It Or Not! No alterations were to be made to the dress and Kim even changed into a replica after the red carpet!” the account read.
Although Kim had expressed at the time that she is “extremely respectful to the dress and what it means to American history,” and had made sure she didn’t have it on for long nor did she sit or drink with it, the result of her action has brought many backlashes from several people. ChadMichael Morrisette is one of such people as he recently spoke with people magazine about the state of the dress as at the time he saw it. Morrisette, who helped with the 2016 auction where Ripley’s got the dress, stated that he saw the dress on June 12 and the state he saw the dress made him leave Ripley’s “in tears.”
Describing the current state of the dress he said, “the delicate silk soufflé fabric appears to be missing crystals. It also appears to have several small rips along the zipper seam.” Also explaining that he has handled majority of MM’s artifact so he knew the dress well and the “damage is so apparent.” He also said that he “could not believe the damage that they allowed to happen for a publicity stunt.”
