UFC commentator and former two-division champion Daniel Cormier has a prediction for Conor McGregor’s return to the UFC. Former Bellator champ Michael Chandler has been calling McGregor out for quite a while now, and seems willing to meet the Irishman at a higher weight than 145 pounds. While DC still wants to see McGregor finish up his trilogy with Nate Diaz, he said on ESPN’s YouTube channel that he’s fully expecting Michael Chandler to get his red panty night.
“Who he should fight is Nate Diaz. They should complete this trilogy. It’s a massive fight. Both guys are not necessarily in the title picture right now. It’s a fun fight.
DC: Conor Should Fight Nate, but Will Fight Michael Chandler
We’ve seen it twice and both of them have delivered. I think it’s evenly matched, so I think he should fight Nate Diaz. Who I believe he will fight is Michael Chandler because Michael Chandler has taken the UFC by storm.”
Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor are one win apiece, with Diaz submitting the Irishman in their first outing, and McGregor winning via decision in the second. Although in the past Conor McGregor has made much of his attempt to return to the lightweight title picture, in the year since he sustained a broken leg fighting Dustin Poirier, “The Notorious” has packed on some serious weight.
Conor seems more interested in fighting at 170 pounds these days, which makes a Diaz trilogy fight – or Michael Chandler without a weight cut – seem far more feasible.
“I think this fight works. I think Chandler is going to engage him on the terms under which McGregor wants to fight and Chandler is willing to go and fight him at 170. So I think he should fight Nate Diaz, [but] I think that he will fight Michael Chandler.”
Both Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler are entertaining fighters with serious power in their strikes. McGregor is 1-3 in his last four fights, while Michael Chandler is 1-2 in his last three. Chandler recently delivered a show-stopping knockout victory over Tony Ferguson, finishing Ferguson with a vicious front kick to the face. Conor, on the other hand, lost twice in a row to Dustin Poirier last year, and has spent the intervening time recovering on his yacht.
McGregor desperately needs a win if he is to keep his UFC career alive, and taking out Michael Chandler, a serious title contender in the division Conor once ruled, would be a major coup for the Irish superstar. Whether he can do it is another story.
