When talent moves from NXT to the WWE Main Roster, fans are generally a bit apprehensive. So often, something is lost in the move – with some talent being completely unrecognisable. GUNTHER as someone who fans worried about, but those fears have been lessened as he tears through the Smackdown roster.
Last night, he destroyed Ricochet to claim the WWE Intercontinental Championship, and has been winning over everyone backstage. Even WWE legend JBL has now praised the skills of GUNTHER.
JBL Wishes GUNTHER Could Have Joined The APA
On the latest episode of Talking Smack, JBL would speak about the potential of GUNTHER. JBL would say the following after asking if he sees GUNTHER as a future WWE Champion.
“Absolutely. He got it a little bit later in life just like I did. There’s a lot of similarities there. I’ve wrestled a lot in Europe and the UK, and that is a different style. It’s a very physical style. It translates very well into the American style and I think people are gonna have a hard matchup with him just as they had with William Regal, Fit Finlay, Tony St. Clair, and all the great guys who came out of that area. They’re going to have a hard time with Gunther. The one big difference between him and most of the guys coming out of there is that he is a physically dominating presence. He is as physical as anybody I’ve ever seen. He would be a great member of the APA.”
The APA was of course an iconic tag team in the attitude era, featuring JBL & Ron Simmons as mercenaries for hire. They would claim 3 reigns as WWF Tag Team Champions, as well as JBL claiming 18 reigns as WWF/WWE Hardcore Champion, and even claiming the WWE Championship in 2004.
A Long Reign Is Needed For The New Champion
Right now, GUNTHER is set to potentially go on a massive run as WWE Intercontinental Champion. He’s no stranger to long title reigns, having held the WWE NXT UK Championship for over 800 days. The Intercontinental Championship is a belt which has been lacking in value over the past few years, with many short reigns leading many to wonder why the belt is still around.
Having someone like GUNTHER, who can have a great match with anyone have a dominant run as champion? That would do a lot to both raise him as a star, and restore some value to the belt.
