If you look at the video it is pretty obvious what is happening. Daniel ‘DC’ Cormier is on the scale naked, with a towel in front of him and his hands on the towel. And what happens when you support on something with your hands? You appear lighter. It is cheating. And a pretty obvious one. However, for Daniel Cormier, it worked.
After 5 years the light-heavyweight fighter and the former two-division champion finally admit that he made weight because of the ‘trick’.
Daniel Cormier Confesses That He Used The Towel Trick To Make Weight At UFC 210
Daniel Cormier was about to face Anthony Johnson for a rematch at UFC 210. Before the event, he did everything to lose weight and match the limit. However, it didn’t work. He tipped the scales by 1.2 lbs.
Because it is in everybody’s interest for the fight to happen, they give him hours to drop to the acceptable weight.
But, out of the blue, Daniel decides to come back for weighing in once again naked minutes after the first measuring. He gets on the scale and magically he makes weight. There were people that did not even notice what happened. However, the more experienced ones immediately saw Cormier’s hands on the towel.
Right after that many questions arose and many were questioning how can this happen, but Cormier was claiming he made weight because the scale has been recalibrated. He made the public believe in this lie until now. Five years later.
“Guys, I want to tell you something because I feel like right now is the time to be completely transparent.” – Cormier jokingly says during his UFC Hall of Fame induction in Las Vegas. “I think I may have grabbed the towel in Buffalo.”
Cormier is a chubby person. He always did have problems with cutting weight. But exactly this, made him a fan favorite each time he fought. Physically he is not able to cut weight easily. The proof is his hospitalization during his cutting process for the 2008 Olympics.
To lose some extra pound or two fighters usually use the hot bath trick. They get inside hot water and sweat out the extra water. However, when Cormier is not able to take it anymore his coach made the suggestion to try a trick.
“I walked back to the back after missing weight by 1.2lb. I tried to give it up guys, trust me, I tried to give it up. Had a pound to lose, they even went and called my wife to try to get me back in the tub. I said, ‘No way, this s*it’s over.’ She told me, Daniel, just take a hot bath. I go, ‘It’s not that simple.’ Dan Leith, the nutritionist goes, ‘DC, do you remember the old wrestling trick?’ I said, ‘can you stand behind me?’ Because there are two. You can put your hands behind you and the person can lift you up. He said no, it’s the towel one.”
“But do you understand the level of ridiculousness that has to happen in order for that to work? I looked down and could not believe my luck. I am a lucky guy. Even when I would lose, somehow the belt would just come back to me. I was like, I’m a lucky guy. So, I look down, and the commissioner’s down on the floor looking at the scale. There’s a second lady. I look down, and she’s right next to him, so I grab the towel like, ‘s*it, we’re home free!’”
