UFC commentator and former middleweight champion Michael Bisping wants to see a huge fight. He says Valentina Shevchenko, women’s flyweight champ, ought to take on Amanda Nunes, recently re-crowned bantamweight (and featherweight) champion, at a special intermediate weight class for a female version of the “BMF” belt. The original “BMF” title, of course, was a fight held between Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz, which Masvidal won via doctor’s stoppage.
While Nunes and Shevchenko have fought twice before, with Nunes claiming victory both times, they remain the two most dominant female fighters on the UFC roster. Bisping, accordingly, wants to see a third clash between these two titans of the sport.
Bisping Calls For “Female BMF Title”: Nunes vs Shevchenko 3
“I would love to see [a third fight]. I talked about this a while ago on the channel, I would love to see Nunes vs. Valentina Shevchenko at 130 pounds, for a female BMF title. They did it for the guys and what’s good for the goose is good for the gander. Let’s have a female BMF. Valentina comes up to 130, Nunes comes down to 130, if she can, and that would be the big thing: if she can.”
Amanda Nunes recently reasserted her place at the top of the 135-pound division with a decisive victory over Julianna Pena. Nunes lost the bantamweight title to Pena late last year in one of the biggest upsets in MMA history. Pena won that first fight via submission, but at UFC 277 Nunes delivered a dominant performance across five rounds, recapturing the title in the process.
Julianna Pena’s presence at bantamweight – and her performance in the Nunes fight – might prevent Shevchenko vs Nunes 3 from taking place any time soon. Pena’s victory over Amanda Nunes may well be enough to earn a trilogy fight for “The Venezuelan Vixen” before Shevchenko gets another shot at “The Lioness”.
“Now obviously there would be talk that because [Nunes and Pena] are one apiece, there should be a rubber match, and technically that’s probably true. Will we see one? I don’t know, because it was a dominating performance. So I’m not sure if there is grounds for it — but actually, no. I’m wrong. It’s one apiece, so they should do a rubber match and put that to be one and for all.”
Which trilogy are we seeing first? Pena vs Nunes or Shevchenko vs Nunes? Will Nunes be able to make a special 130 pound catchweight fight? Let us know what you think in the comments.
