Bellator’s women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg wants to make a splash in another combat sport. Cyborg boasts an MMA “grand slam” – a title in every promotion she’s ever fought for – and is looking forward to a very different challenge. Speaking on The Catch Up, Cyborg discussed how professional boxing was “one of her dreams”. It seems that her pro boxing debut is all but confirmed, only a few bits of paperwork away from going ahead.
“My team already received the contract, we’ve been back and forth working on the contract, I believe soon, we’ll finish and I’ll sign. Then you guys are gonna know who and where is gonna be my next fight. I’m very excited to do my first fight in boxing. Very, very excited. It’s one of my dreams.”
Cris Cyborg Set To Move into Pro Boxing
Meanwhile, with Cyborg nearing the end of her Bellator contract, PFL has made no secret of their desire to tempt her over to their organization. PFL’s star female fighter, Kayla Harrison, wants to take on Cyborg in a much-anticipated superfight. Cyborg, however, pointed out that they’ve made no approach, and she’s happy working with Scott Coker.
‘“We’ve never had any talks with PFL. They never talk about this fight. I know it’s a lot of talks on the internet to make this fight happen with [Harrison], two different ways, but I’ve never had the opportunity to talk about anything.
I’ve been talking to [Bellator President] Scott Coker about boxing fights, we’ve talked about how being co-promoters would be really nice. I really love working with Scott Coker and if we have the opportunity to make this fight happen and continue to be with Scott, that would be amazing, co-promote the event, and I think make the fight happen.”
Cyborg also dissed Harrison’s ability to sell pay-per-views, but did not dismiss the idea of fighting Kayla Harrison outright.
“You see [Harrison’s manager] Ali [Abdelaziz] already been saying like Kayla didn’t sell pay-per-views, it’s not interesting.
But I believe the promoters are pushing for the fight to happen but her own manager [isn’t]. I think a lot of things have to change if they really want this fight to happen. I’m open to the best fight for my fans.”
Cris Cyborg, if she leaves MMA for good to take up boxing, will leave behind a stellar career. Who do you think she’ll take on in her boxing debut? Will we see Cyborg fight Kayla Harrison one day? Let us know in the comments.
