It’s safe to say UFC president Dana White is a huge fan of Brandon “The Assassin Baby” Moreno. With Moreno freshly crowned as the UFC’s interim flyweight champion, a fourth fight against the other flyweight champ, Deiveson Figueiredo beckons. Dana White described Moreno’s star power among the intensely loyal Mexican fanbase and beyond to MMAJunkie.
When asked about Moreno being the biggest Mexican star on the UFC roster, Dana White took the chance to sing the interim champion’s praises. “Not [just] Mexican. He’s one of the biggest stars that we have.
Dana White: “Badass” Moreno is one of UFC’s Biggest Stars
He’s one of the biggest stars on the roster. When we do signings with Brandon Moreno, he’s one of the most popular fighters in the company. He’s your typical durable, badass Mexican fighter.
You see him come out with the headband like Julio Cesar Chavez the other day, and what does he do? He comes out with the Julio Cesar Chavez headband and then finishes the fight with a body shot. You ever think of that? That’s pretty f*cking awesome, to be honest with you.”
Brandon Moreno was the undisputed flyweight champion until very recently. The 125-pound division’s title conversation has been dominated by the rivalry between Moreno and Deiveson Figueiredo. Their first fight ended in a draw. The second, one of the most hotly anticipated rematches in recent memory, saw Moreno become the UFC’s first Mexican champion, winning the fight via submission.
The third, and most recent, fight went the other way, with Figueiredo recapturing the flyweight title in a razor-close decision. When Brandon Moreno stopped Kai Kara-France with a vicious liver kick at UFC 277, he picked up the interim title, in doing so putting himself on yet another collision course with the champ, Deiveson Figueiredo. It will mark the first title tetralogy in UFC history, something of which Dana White is very aware. With the trilogy 1-1-1 so far, this is the kind of winner-takes-all clash that spins serious cash for the promotion.
“We could do it wherever. Wherever we end up, we end up. We could do that fight in Alaska. It’s going to be a big fight. People are going to want to see it. It’s just, you could watch those guys fight 10 times. It’s very rare. Doesn’t happen often.”
