Fans of UFC superstar Conor McGregor’s UFC will have to wait until 2023 to see the notorious Irishman in the Octagon once again. That’s according to his manager, Tim Simpson, who told MMAJunkie that McGregor is training “like a madman” in addition to his busy schedule filming for the upcoming Jake Gylenhaal film Roadhouse.
Simpson insisted that Conor McGregor’s Hollywood commitments won’t affect his scheduled comeback. “It fits in perfectly. He’s still on track for a big return next year, but this fits in perfectly in the meantime.”
McGregor “Training Like a Madman” For 2023 UFC Return, According to Manager
Conor McGregor has been sidelined ever since he sustained a broken leg fighting Dustin Poirier in July last year. Although McGregor has returned to training, Simpson claims that “The Notorious” is still healing. “The leg is still healing.
I think there’s a little bit more to go on that, but he’s been training like a madman twice a day, every day. He’s got his full team out there: the McGregor Fast team, all his health and fitness guys, physio, boxing, coaching. He’s been going hard. He’s been training super hard. He’s in amazing shape. Just final adjustments to get that leg back where it needs to be.”
Recently, McGregor’s longtime MMA coach John Kavanagh reported that Conor has not lost a beat despite his time away from competition. Kavanagh, widely renowned as the “godfather” of Irish MMA, praised McGregor’s jiu-jitsu.
“He’s healthy, happy and it’s great to have him back. The last few sessions in the gym here were MMA-orientated – he’s got the all-clear for that now. He did a great session last night, we got some great rounds in. He hasn’t lost a beat and was looking great.
Trust me, I got to have a bit of a wrestle with him last night and I felt it. When that silverback arm goes around your neck there’s a bit of an extra squeeze there, so he’s very very strong at the moment. But look, when we get to the stage of looking at weight classes and opponents there’s nobody more professional than Conor at making weight and it will all be done properly.”
Although McGregor remains the biggest star in the UFC – and one of the most famous athletes on the planet – his fortunes inside the Octagon have waned recently. His meteoric rise to the top culminated in McGregor becoming the first simultaneous two-division champion in UFC history. That was in 2016, and in the six years since he has only won a single fight, against Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone, in early 2020.
