Raquel Rodriguez Acknowledges NXT Past With Dakota Kai Ahead Of WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship Match

We’re very close to seeing new Women’s Tag Team Champions crowned in WWE. Having nearly been deactivated by Vince McMahon, the belts were revived by Triple H – and a messy tournament would follow. We’ve seen teams pulled due to vaccine issues, an injury to Toxic Attraction, and more. However – now we have the finals set, with Raquel Rodriguez & Aliyah meeting Iyo Sky & Dakota Kai for the vacant belts. Raquel & Kai are former two time NXT Women’s Tag Team Champions – and that past is not being ignored.

Raquel Rodriguez Is Dedicated To Her Current Partner

On the latest episode of The Smackdown Lowdown, Raquel Rodriguez & Aliyah would be interviewed ahead of this major title match. With the past of Kai & Raquel in the air, Raquel would ensure everyone that they aren’t working together – and she’s committed to winning gold with Aliyah. Raquel would be quoted saying the following.

“I know Dakota very well. We were the first NXT Tag Team Champions and we were the first ever two-time NXT Women’s Tag Team Champions. But that doesn’t change anything. She’s made her choices and I’ve made mine, and I am very excited to be making these finals — my Raw debut with my girl Aliyah by my side>”

Aliyah would be happy to hear this, as this is her first big chance to claim gold in her WWE career. She’d have the following to say in response.

“Thanks, Raquel. I mean, I know I’ve got a lot of proving to do and I haven’t proven myself yet. But with Raquel by my side, I am confident that we are going to be taking those tag team titles.”

This title match takes place on the upcoming August 29th episode of Monday Night RAW.

NXT Being Acknowledged On The Main Roster Is Always A Good Sign

Part of what makes this so notable, is that prior to Vince McMahons exit- we’d really see NXT treated as a separate entity from WWE 99% of the time. Call ups would be treated as re-debuts, with stars often losing a lot of what made them special in NXT – and forcing them to start fresh.

This is a thing of the past now, with Triple H & Shawn Michaels working in tandem to build stars in NXT 2.0, and faithfully bring them to the main roster. Just by acknowledging the past of Kai & Raquel, this match is instantly more interesting to fans who have followed their careers in recent years, being rewarded for their dedication to WWE.
