When it comes to WWE, shows like Monday Night RAW & Smackdown Live are just extended previews towards the PPV events. WWE want to build up interest for shows like WrestleMania, SummerSlam, Clash At The Castle, Extreme Rules, and more. However – for many years, we’d see a heavy focus on gimmick events like Extreme Rules or Hell in A Cell, but this might be changing in 2023.
WWE To Cut Back On Gimmick PPVs, Run More Shows Out Of The USA
Right now is a time of change in WWE, with Vince McMahon having retired. With Nick Khan & Stephanie McMahon as the co-CEO’s, and Triple H in charge of creative, some big changes have been made in WWE – and mostly for the better. Released names were brought back, match and storyline quality has risen, and so has morale. Now, it looks like changes could be made to how WWE handles their big events.
First reported by Bryan Alvarez of the Wrestling Observer, WWE is looking to cut back on gimmick PPVs, and put a higher focus on running shows in international market. This is being done due to matches like Hell in a Cell or the Elimination Chamber having become more set parts of the schedule, rather than being used organically.
Hell In A Cell Will Benefit Most
Hell in a Cell had a great match that fit with the storyline earlier this year with Seth Rollins & Cody Rhodes, but it was the first time in years that was the case. Others like Rollins vs. The Fiend & Strowman vs. Reigns were messes, ending the match in a DQ and no-contest. Hopefully with these changes, we’ll only be seeing that match when it makes sense. This will also extend to Extreme Rules matches, TLC matches, etc.
An increase in international events will also be great news for the global fanbase of WWE. Clash At The Castle was very well received, and WWE could be looking to run more big events in the UK, as well as get back into markets like Mexico & Japan. We will know more about the PPV schedule closer to 2023, but as of right now – WWE Day One has been cut from the schedule, which could be the first of many PPV’s to leave.
