It wasn’t that long ago fans were upset that Austin Theory was losing matches and was being “buried” by Triple H.
As we mentioned previously, we expected it to lead to a rebirth of sorts for him, and since winning the United States Championship in a Triple Threat Match at Survivor Series WarGames, it looks like he’s going to continue building for the future.
Theory’s talked about how his previous character had a ceiling, and now he feels that he’s being built to face Roman Reigns.
That may be the long term plan, and we have to say it looks far more possible now after his reinvention than it did previously.
More to come
In an interview with the Ottawa City News, Theory talked about his transition and what he thinks it could lead to.
“The cocky, arrogant, douchy persona just really gets under people’s skin, and it did its purpose. And having the Money in the Bank contract and the way that character was, there’s a little bit of a ceiling there just because when you look at Roman Reigns being so unstoppable and everything.”
He continued to expand on his reasoning by saying the one that will finally defeat Reigns will need to be a worthy talent and not someone that’s brought in for a quick win or by luck.
“I think the chapter that Austin Theory is headed now is setting him up to build to being that qualifier to stand toe to toe with Roman Reigns.”
To make that happen, Theory or whomever is going to defeat Reigns will have to be built up as an aggressive, dominate competitor similar to Drew McIntyre, Bobby Lashley, and others.
While Theory may not be the most imposing figure in the ring, how he presents himself between his demeanor and aggression will go a long way to lifting him up to that status.
This is a far cry from the gimmicky and often goofy persona that was fine for the mid card, but not for the main event.
The change may have been previously planned, but if it was it’s good it was sped up as Theory was beginning to feel stale in that role.
But that’s still some time away as he and Seth Rollins have to close out their feud yet to kick start Theory’s United States Championship run.
