One of the aspects of WWE that can annoy some fans of professional wrestling is how it can often feel walled off to the rest of the industry. They generally aren’t as keen to reference outside companies, unless it directly benefits them – like when they brought Mickie James into the 2022 women’s Royal Rumble as Knockouts Women’s Champion. That’s the type of reference that strengthened the match, showing a champion from another company trying to earn a WrestleMania main event. Even smaller references can be shot down, as shown by JBL not being able to sneak an Aces & Eights reference into a poker game segment.
JBL Wanted Luke Gallows To Toss Down An Ace & An Eight During A Poker Game
On the December 5th episode of Monday Night RAW, JBL would host a poker invitational. We would see the likes of Baron Corbin, Dominik Mysterio, Akira Tozawa and Luke Gallows on the show. JBL noticed a potential fun easter egg to stick in the segment, given Gallows past in Impact Wrestling as a member of the faction “Aces & Eights”. While speaking on the Stories With Brisco & Bradshaw podcast,
“When we’re dealing the cards and we’re doing the last thing, it occurred to me. I wanted to have Luke Gallows have aces and eights for his hand and not say anything about it. Just throw it down.
I didn’t have a chance to clear it with WWE. I don’t know if that would’ve been a problem or not, but I just thought about that as soon as we’re doing the last scene. I thought, ‘Damn it, I missed something there.'”
It’s very likely this wouldn’t have caused any issues, but someone in the WWE Hall of Fame being worried to slip an easter egg into a segment says a fair bit about the culture of WWE. Things are undoubtedly going to loosen up in time with the changes in management, but a lingering fear to stick to the old status quo will be hard for the likes of JBL to get away from.
