There are few wrestlers today as accomplished as “The Phenomenal” AJ Styles. From NWA Heavyweight Champion to TNA World Champion to WWE Heavyweight Champion, the face that runs the place has used a variety of moves to get to this point. Let’s rate these moves on our patented DOOM scale to see how effective they are.
Styles Clash
I’m going to be completely honest with you. Back in the TNA on FS1 days, when I first saw AJ Styles in the X Division, I thought that the Styles Clash was one of the coolest moves ever next to the Canadian Destroyer.
Stupid younger me. The more I aged and saw more wrestling, I realized that not only are both of these moves stupid, they don’t even look very effective.
As far as modern-day AJ Styles, he rarely wins matches with this move. I think that one of his other moves of DOOM would be closer to his actual match finisher.
This move lacks impact, takes time to set up properly so that the opponent don’t get hurt, and have been known to hurt wrestlers although it isn’t AJ Styles’ fault usually.
DOOM Score: 2 out of 5
Phenomenal Forearm
AJ Styles’ finisher move in WWE, the Phenomenal Forearm is very simple yet very effective. He has won some of the biggest matches of his career with this move.
Simple isn’t always better but in this case, it is. Who would’ve thought that a simple springboard forearm could finish some of the biggest names in wrestling?
AJ Styles’ natural athleticism help him make this move look great by getting major air on the springboard part. The only downside to this move is that there is a slight setup and it is very easily reversed by many moves.
DOOM Score: 4 out of 5
Calf Crusher
I think that every wrestler, no matter what their wrestling style is, should have an impact move, a striking move, and a submission move that they can go to in order to end a match.
AJ Styles have his submission move and unlike many submission moves that we see today, this one actually looks like it is painful.
AJ Styles not only make this move look amazing, but can also do the move from many different spots and in many different situations.
Although he rarely wins with this move, whenever he does do it, he makes you believe that he is about to get the submission win with it.
DOOM Score: 4 out of 5
Pele Kick
When you first see someone do a move that you’ve never seen before, its pretty amazing, but when you see it done often by many other wrestlers, it loses its luster.
While the Pele Kick isn’t as watered down as a move like the superkick, it isn’t what it used to be.
Unlike the Styles Clash, I could see that the Pele Kick was a basic move from the first time that I saw it. The only difference is that I still thought that the move was cool despite its lack of impact.
DOOM Score: 1 out of 5
