I’ve always loved a good tag team match. Within the last few years, WWE’s tag team division has gone from an afterthought to a division that can main event any television show they have and give the singles champions a rest. This isn’t to say that it is perfect and there are a few glaring issues with it.
The State of the WWE Tag Team Division
I happy to say that the WWE tag team division is in a great place… on Smackdown. On Raw, it is absolutely terrible. This is sad because just a year or a year and a half ago, it was looking up.
When Riddle and Orton were the champions, they had a solid division with RKBro, Alpha Academy, The Dirty Dogs, and The Street Profits. I think that they could’ve used at least two or three more teams, but it was a solid division to start with.
Fast forward to today, and you only have The Street Profits, Judgement Day, The OC, and Alpha Academy left. I think that one big issue is that for some stupid reason, like Vince did with the WWE Universal Heavyweight Championship, he combined the Raw and Smackdown tag team titles into one.
Like The WWE Universal title, with the champions (The Usos) being Smackdown superstars, Monday nights get the bad end of the stick in this situation.
Smackdown’s tag team division is in a great spot though, even if the New Day won’t be on the main roster for an extended time period. You still have the Usos, the Brawling Brutes, Imperium, The Viking Raiders, Hit Row, The Maxim Male Models (lol), The Garza Brothers, and Legado del Fantasma.
The bigger thing with this is that on Smackdown, the teams get television time all the time, whether its just for an angle or if it’s a match. They also have storylines to go with them for the most part.
How Could the WWE Tag Team Division Improve
The answer is simple. They need to split those titles so that the guys on Raw have something to go after. Its sad to see some of the talent on Monday night have meaningless matches because they have no goals.
I think that the Usos will eventually lose the titles at WrestleMania to KO and Sami, and the first thing that they should do is be some good guys and split those titles in half and give each show a pair of belts.
If they stay on Raw, which they should, Smackdown could hold a tournament to see who will be the new Smackdown Tag Team Champions. This could end with the Usos reaching the finals and losing to a babyface team, probably Butch and Ridge Holland, or a new team from NXT that they bring up.
