Right now, Dwayne Johnson might be known more as a hollywood superstar than professional wrestling, but that doesn’t do justice to how excellent his professional wrestling career was. A multi-time WWF Champion, The Rock remains one of the most popular names in WWE – with fans hoping for him to pop up in 2023 as an opponent for Roman Reigns at WrestleMania. However, fellow legend The Undertaker didn’t expect him to last long in WWE after his disaster of a debut in the 90’s… and knew he wouldn’t last once his true charisma started to shine.
The Undertaker Knew The Rock Wouldn’t Last Long In WWE As He Became A Star
While speaking with Gary Vaynerchuk in 2020, The Undertaker had a chance to speak about about The Rock’s WWE debut.
“He came into Madison Square Garden, and they’d given him the name of Rocky Maivia. Oh my gosh, it was awful. I mean, they handcuffed him right out of the get go, right? I remember watching him, and the Garden fans, they’re merciless if they don’t like what you’re doing. And man, they just lit him up.I had no clue to how charismatic he was.
I was like, ‘Such a shame, he’s not gonna be here long.’ Once he got to The Nation of Domination, it had completely flipped. By the time he was at the end of his run with them, I was like, ‘He’s not gonna be here long.’ You could just tell that he was destined to move on to better things.”
It’s hard to deny that The Rock was always going to grow beyond WWE, and once he scored a role in The Scorpion King, it became hard for WWE to keep him around due to his Hollywood schedule. The Rock only showing up for big matches kept him a special attraction, whereas The Undertaker would remain a steady name in company until his retirement in 2020.
