While WWE mostly runs shows in the USA these days, it’s hard to deny they have a global fanbase. In particular, they have a massive fanbase in India. WWE previously tried to use that market to drive business with Jinder Mahal winning the WWE Championship, and in 2021 would run a show packed with Indian talent in Superstar Spectacle, albeit from the WWE Performance Center. However in January 2023, they intend to record a major show in India.
WWE To Return To India On January 18th
Reports of this potential Indian Supershow would start to circulate in late November, with more solid information now available. WWE intends to take the Smackdown roster to India around January 18th. This means the likes of Roman Reigns, Drew McIntyre, Braun Strowman, Bray Wyatt, and Jinder Mahal will all potentially be part of this show.
We can also expect WWE to send Indian talent from NXT along, including Veer, Sanga & Guru Raaj. Veer & Sanga were in the main event of Superstar Spectacle 2021, teaming with Drew McIntyre to defeat Jinder Mahal & The Bollywood Boyz. They recently reunited in NXT, and are set to face The Creed Brothers in a grudge match at NXT Deadline this weekend.
It has been five years since WWE has run a live show in India, with the last show coming in December 2017 and being main evented by Jinder Mahal and Triple H. The match saw Triple H claim the victory. With the scale of shows in Saudi Arabia, Australia and the UK since 2017 – it’s reasonable to expect a big card for whatever WWE has planned on January 18th.
With it being just 10 days removed from the Royal Rumble 2023 however, we can’t expect many title defenses. It’s possible Roman Reigns will make a title defense there and not be on the Royal Rumble card, but we will need to wait until January to get a better idea of what matches are intended for India.
