Recently, we would report there was a WWE supershow planned for India, set for January 18th, 2023. This was set to be WWE’s return to India, having not run a show in the region since 2017 – making it a major deal for India fans. However, WWE would never formally announce or start to promote this event, and now the reason is clear – it won’t be happening until later in 2023.
WWE’s TV Partner In India Delayed Major Event
In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer would publish an update about this event – noting that it was delayed by WWE’s TV partner in India. Meltzer would say the following.
“The decision was made by Sony Six, which is merging with Zee in India, to hold off the show until the merger is finalized. The merger is expected to go through in April, so the show would take place after April.”
Sony Six wants the show to be built around Indian talent, which means that the likes of Jinder Mahal, Sanga, Veer, Shanky and Guru Raaj will likely find themselves in major matches. There’s a chance WWE brings The Great Khali back in as a special guest as well, being one of the biggest stars WWE ever had from the region.
More Time To Build Up Their Indian Stars Ahead Of This Show
This might end up being a smart move for WWE in the long run. Originally, this show was going to be run incredibly close to Royal Rumble 2023, giving little chance for it to be the center of attention on WWE programming. It also gives WWE more time to naturally build up their indian talent.
Given the change, it’s likely we will see one of the currently WWE contracted talents win a championship before this show begins. Sanga & Veer have the best chance, being in the NXT Tag Team division, and with time to finish up their feud with The Creed Brothers? They could move into the role as challengers for NXT Tag Team Champions, The New Day.
There’s also a chance that we see former WWE Champion Jinder Mahal built up as a challenger for Roman Reigns, provided Reigns is still Undisputed WWE Universal Champion when this show happens.
