Now that it’s been awhile since CM Punk was in the pro wrestling news for all the wrong reasons, there’s more news trickling out here and there about his run in AEW.
One of the more curious pieces is that Punk reportedly didn’t want to be AEW World Champion.
CM Punk Didn’t Want to be AEW Champion
It makes sense given he said he just wanted to enjoy his time there and being a company’s champion means he’d be the figurehead and carry the weight of the company on his back.
It’s a pressure that got to Shawn Michaels during his run in the WWE as well as others, but Punk was a world champion previously, so he knew what to expect when Tony Kahn tabbed him to take the title from Hangman Adam Page.
While Punk’s reign ended abruptly, there’s no denying he was the fan favorite at the time of his diva episode that led to a brawl.
A different perspective
On a recent episode of Dax Harwood’s FTR podcast, he talked about his relationship with Punk and about how he had no clue things would go sideways.
He also talked about Punk not wanting the AEW Championship as he was just happy to be there wanted to enjoy his time with the company.
Special thanks to Fightful Select for the transcript:
“Punk was still so joyous and happy to be in the wrestling business. To be honest, he told me, when they were going to put the belt on him, that he didn’t want the belt. He said, ‘I just want to have fun,’ but he understood that Tony putting the belt on him would put AEW in a better light. He took it, begrudgingly a little bit, but he took the belt. At the time, he was taking me, Cash, Max [MJF], Wardlow, Hobbs, I’m missing so many guys, he was taking us out to eat, always paying for it. He bought all the girls in the locker room Starbucks gift cards and had one of the girls hand them out, anonymously, and didn’t say who they were from, but it was from him, just because he loved the atmosphere and loved being there. He also loved the work the girls were putting in. He thought they were busting their ass to try and get the attention that WWE’s women’s division was getting.”
Some of the best leaders and champions in history are people that don’t want to be there, but in this case something went wrong and now Dax is reportedly getting heat for his comments during the podcast.
It’s always interesting to see and hear other perspectives about what happened and what others are like behind the scenes.
