Jake Paul is once again set to box Tommy Fury, younger brother to heavyweight champ Tyson Fury. The fight, if it goes ahead – unlike Paul’s last two bookings against Fury – will mark Paul’s first appearance against an established professional boxer. Paul, who first rose to prominence on YouTube and the Disney Channel, however, believes that Tommy Fury is not a “real boxer”, and is in fact a “puppet” of his brother and father.
“A part of me definitely still doubts [that Fury shows up]. It’s scary and it’s annoying and him not showing up to the face-to-face we were just supposed to do right now, it sucks and the kid’s not necessarily reliable, but the money’s good for him. So it would just be so dumb and I think he’s probably tired of [Fury’s partner and fellow reality TV star Molly-Mae Hague] making all the money in the relationship. He’s got a kid now so he needs to help pay for some diapers.
Jake Paul Calls Tommy Fury A “Fury Family Puppet”
I think he’s a big talker, but I don’t think he believes the things that he’s saying. He’s the Fury family puppet, right? Tyson and John both were real fighters, real boxers, real dogs, and Tommy feels like he has to live up to that so he’s saying the things that they say, but I don’t think he believes it. I don’t think he believes in himself and he’s going to be in for a rude awakening and he’s going to hate this sport after I’m done with him.”
Jake Paul remains undefeated as a pro boxer, most recently dispatching UFC legend Anderson Silva via decision. Paul’s record thus far has mostly seen the YouTuber square off against retired, smaller MMA fighters. On that note, Paul has revealed that the backup for the Fury fight is former UFC welterweight Mike Perry, who currently competes in bareknuckle boxing under the BKFC banner.
“We have Mike Perry on standby. Let’s go, Mike Perry. He’s ready to jump in in case Tommy pulls out.”
The last time Jake Paul was slated to fight Tommy Fury, the fight was cancelled due to Fury’s inability to enter the United States. That came hot on the heels of the Fury family’s alleged connection to Daniel Kinahan, wanted by the FBI.
Paul vs Fury is set to take place on February 25 in Saudi Arabia. Do you think this will be the fight that finally goes ahead? Let us know in the comments.
