If there was anything that was ever clear about Vince McMahon in WWE, it’s that he never really cared for the art of tag team wrestling. Tag teams in WWE have almost always been used to launch someone as a singles star, or to give some single stars something to do away from singles title hunts. Teams would be broken up on a whim, making it hard to get invested in growing teams in the company. Even Kevin Nash wasn’t immune to this, knowing that Vince hated tag team wrestling since the 90’s.
Kevin Nash Notes How Vince McMahon Looked At Tag Team Wrestling As A Simple Garnish
On the latest episode of the Kliq This podcast, the WWE Hall of Famer and nine time WCW World Tag Team Champion Kevin Nash would speak about Vince’s hatred of tag team wrestling. Nash had the following to say.
“Vince hates tags. He always hated tag matches. He used to call them ‘garnish’ and shit. I’m like, ‘Man, you can do so much fucking good shit in a tag match.”
Vince essentially viewed tag team wrestling as a lesser act to get the audience ready for the main course of the night, which would be big time singles matches. It seems likely that had Nash stuck around in WWE in the 1990’s, fans would have never gotten his stellar tag team of The Outsiders with Scott Hall, who would go on to become 7 time WCW Tag Team Champions during the Monday Night Wars.
Paying Four Guys For One Match Wasn’t What Vince Wanted To Do Often
Another way to put the hatred Vince McMahon had for tag team wrestling came from former WWE writer Freddie Prinze Jr. During an episode of the Wrestling With Freddie podcast, he’d repeat the following message he previously heard from Vince about tag team wrestling.
“Freddie, I gotta pay four guys for one f*cking match.”
With Vince McMahon potentially looking to regain booking power in WWE, fans are losing hope in seeing some tag teams from the NXT brand truly get a chance to flourish, and are once again looking at teams to see who will be the Shawn Michaels, and who will be the Marty Jannety.
