Injuries are part of like in professional wrestling, and between them and schedule conflicts cards are always subject to change and the WWE had to think fast this past weekend at the Royal Rumble.
When his numbers was called to enter the Rumble, Rey Mysterio didn’t come out and the reason was quickly discovered it was because he was attacked backstage by Dominik Mysterio and the Judgement Day.
Dominik and Rey’s feud as been growing over the holidays as Dominik attacked Rey at Thanksgiving, and Rey had him arrested at Christmas for showing up at his home again.
Since then, Dominik has sounded even more like a whimpering puppy when he exaggerates his time in jail, and now with the storyline attack on Rey to prevent him a chance at appearing at a final WrestleMania, we could see father and son face off at WrestleMania 39.
Injuries happen
Since the Royal Rumble, it’s been reported that Rey not coming out wasn’t part of the storyline per se, but an alteration had to be made due to an injury Rey sustained at the previous night’s Smackdown against Karrion Kross.
The injury was significant enough for him to be pulled from the Royal Rumble. The new came courtesy of the Wrestling Observer via Sportskeeda.
“Rey Mysterio was injured last night during the Loredo Smackdown tapings against Karrion Kross. He was going to be in the Rumble, but that spot was changed. What happened was they did a spot where he’s supposed to come out, but didn’t come out, and then Dominik comes out. I think they were supposed to do some teases with them at in the Rumble to set up their WrestleMania match.”
While it was expected by just about everyone that Cody Rhodes would win the Royal Rumble, there’s always the chance that Rey could’ve pulled it out and that was the original plan.
To be honest, Cody winning it as the final entrant lacked the power it would’ve had if he’d come in earlier or GUNTHER had won it, but his placement could’ve been a last minute tweak.
There have been reports that Cody wasn’t officially cleared to wrestler until the day of the Rumble, and with Rey’s injury it’s possible plans changed in some way at the last minute.
