With recent reports that the Rock won’t be at WrestleMania 39 to face Roman Reigns due to timing issues, there have been reports that Steve Austin is being offered a healthy sum of money to appear instead.
As rumors go, this it a pretty good one and there’s no doubt fans would love to see Austin and Reigns face off, especially after Austin’s return to the ring against Kevin Owens at WrestleMania 38.
Steve Austin Rumored to Replace The Rock Against Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39
It was arguably one of the best, if not the best, match of the night for fans as it marked Austin’s first return to the ring since WrestleMania 19.
While we’re sure it’ll be a fun match, it almost feels like a let down after all the speculation about the Rock returning to face Reigns.
Storyline wise, we expect Austin to take offense at some of Reigns’ comments and that’ll be the beginning of the build between them, but it also feels more like a weak attempt to placate.
We have little doubt Triple H will come up with a solid storyline for this and he won’t have Austin get squashed, so there’s plenty of hope things will turn out better than we may expect.
Setting up a longer run
To be honest, we doubted the Rock would defeat Reigns if/when they face off, and it seems assured that Austin will lose with plenty of help from the Bloodline.
But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. Nothing is locked in yet as things can change and this is just a rumor.
As an Austin fan, it’ll be great to see him in the ring once again, and it could open the door for the Rock to make an appearance to help Austin.
It’d buy WWE time to build that storyline and the Rock can still have a presence at the event and get a huge pop from the crowd.
The only real downside to this scenario is Reigns will hold onto at least one of his titles. No matter who the legend is, we don’t see them winning the championship, though given how Reigns has so few appearances would it be any different?
This could also explain Brock Lesnar’s return to further antagonize Bobby Lashley. Once their feud is over, it could put Lashley in position to make another championship run at Reigns, and if the Bloodline is finally kept out of it we’ll most likely see a new champion.
With so many possible storylines, we can’t wait to see what’s going to happen over the next few months.
