Former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou has been rumored to face Tyson Fury in the boxing ring for years now. With Ngannou freshly freed from his UFC contract, the potential fight looks likelier than ever, and Ngannou recently confirmed with TMZ Sports that his and Fury’s camps have been in touch to reach an agreement.
“I’ve talked to somebody, some of [Tyson Fury’s] advisors, but they’re working on a fight with [Oleksandr] Usyk in April. So, until then, he will not be free. But I’m trying to see if we can have an agreement before that fight.
Team Ngannou In Touch With Tyson Fury For Boxing Superfight
That will also give me some time to get prepared for a boxing fight. So I have no problem with the timeline that I’m expecting, that I hope will be sometime in June, July, which is doable. So let’s see. I think it’s too early to make a conclusion. It’s too early to say anything about it but it’s definitely something that we’re looking into.”
Ngannou and Fury have been building interest in a superfight for years now. With Fury set to face Oleksandr Usyk next, Francis Ngannou won’t be fighting him in the immediate future. However, upon Ngannou’s departure from the UFC, Fury called him out once more, requesting a special-rules bout with four-ounce gloves and a cage, rather than the traditional squared circle of the boxing ring.
Ngannou conceded that the rumors have been swirling around the Fury vs Ngannou bout for years. However, the fight feels closer than ever, and Ngannou knows that fight fans have waited for a MMA vs boxing event of this magnitude ever since Conor McGregor fought Floyd Mayweather back in 2017.
That fight ended in a loss for McGregor, but one would expect that “The Predator” is anticipating a finer performance than the Irish superstar. Not least among these considerations is Ngannou’s terrifying knockout power, which has the towering Cameroonian currently holding the world record for hardest punch ever recorded.
“We’ve been talking about this fight the past two years. A little over two years. I think at this point, the people are waiting for this fight and talking about this fight more than the Joshua fight, although the Joshua fight is still a massive fight. I would say both fights would be in the same magnitude of fight, but we are kind of advanced and willing to fight with Tyson Fury, and that looks like the way to go.”
Is Ngannou vs Fury the next superfight to make? Let us know in the comments.
