UFC commentator and former two-division champion Daniel “DC” Cormier believes Colby Covington needs to get back to the Octagon sooner rather than later. Covington has not fought since his last UFC appearance, a year ago, when he defeated Jorge Masvidal via unanimous decision. Cormier discussed Covington’s position in a recent episode of DC & RC.
“He won his last fight, but time has passed. Time is passing, and being idle isn’t the best thing for a guy in a division that’s constantly moving. But the moment Colby Covington starts to re-insert himself, he’ll be loud, he’ll be boisterous, he’ll have a lot to say, and people will start to pay attention. And then right away he’s back relevant, because we have not seen anyone but Kamaru Usman for a really long time solve the puzzle that is Colby Covington.
DC: Colby Covington Must Recapture Momentum To Return From “No-Man’s Land”
So, I think he will be relevant for a while, but I think he needs to get rolling again, because momentum is key in this sport. And when you don’t have momentum, nobody’s really checking for you, and I think Colby Covington needs to make sure he doesn’t find himself in that place where he is in no man’s land out on an island by himself.”
The main reason for Covington’s relative inactivity since the Masvidal fight seems to be the court case between the two fighters. Masvidal allegedly assaulted Covington outside a Miami steakhouse not long after the fight. Masvidal was arrested a few days later, and Covington gave a statement to police detailing the damage to his tooth and Rolex sustained in the incident.
Masvidal found himself charged with felony aggravated battery resulting in great bodily harm and criminal mischief. He has pleaded not guilty, and could potentially find himself in prison for up to fifteen years if found guilty.
Unlike Colby Covington, however, Jorge Masvidal has a fight booked. Masvidal will face Gilbert Burns at UFC 287 in April. Colby Covington, on the other hands, shows no signs of returning to competition.
Covington was on a remarkable run until he found himself opposite Kamaru Usman, then welterweight champion, for the second time. Usman defeated Covington over the course of their five-round fight via decision. After that, Covington bounced back with a dominant victory over Masvidal. Since then, however, Colby “Chaos” Covington has faded into the background, with Usman losing the belt to Leon Edwards.
