Torch passing is something we look forward to as wrestling fans. We want to see the successors to a position or role held by respected wrestlers and The Undertaker has proven elusive in giving the nod to someone.
However, the moment between The Undertaker and Bray Wyatt at RAW 30 reignited discussion of Wyatt filling that supernatural threat role. Former SmackDown General Manager Teddy Long believes that his Thursday night attack dog gave the nod to Wyatt.
Is It Too Early to Crown Bray Wyatt The Undertaker’s Successor?
Honestly, I can see the career parallels between the two down to starting with nondescript gimmicks. Taker’s gimmick was unique regardless of the era and often, it was out of place with the rest of WWE while being the bridge between eras.
You could say that The Deadman walked so that Wyatt could run. While Wyatt had to deal with some disagreeable creative, he didn’t have to deal with disagreeable creative and lulls with whatever gimmick.
I mean, those first couple of WrestleMania main events in the Streak weren’t the most impressive of wins and most of the stories were eventful but nothing Taker couldn’t handle.
To be the successor doesn’t require Bray Wyatt to go through everything that The Undertaker went through—it just requires Taker to dub him as such. If he feels that Bray is the best pick to take over his role in the WWE landscape, then he’s that guy.
It’s important to note that The Undertaker is a wrestler who filed the gimmick and the role for decades and isn’t easy to replace. No other WWE superstar became one of a few achievements that can only be won once in a career. However, it should also be noted that the person passing the torch determines who gets it: not the fans.
