Since being signed by WWE in July of 2002, Rey Mysterio has become one of the biggest hispanic stars in company history. Considered by many to be one of the greatest luchadores of all time, Mysterio has simply become a legend – and the benchmark that many luchadores have failed to hit in WWE. His success has led to WWE constantly looking for the next big hispanic star, and while Santos Escobar might not find himself in that spotlight – he’s more than earned the respect of Mysterio.
Rey Mysterio & Santos Escobar Share Masks And Show Respect In WWE Digital Exclusive
Since Santos Escobar has left WWE NXT to join the roster of Smackdown Live, fans have wanted to see him interact with Mysterio. They had some past history in AAA & Lucha Underground throughout 2015 & 2016, when Escobar was known by names like King Cuerno & El Hijo del Fantasma. However, the most recent episode of Smackdown Live would see Escobar & Mysterio share a WWE ring for the first time, as they were part of a Fatal Four Way match for a shot at the WWE Intercontinental Championship.
While fans got to see them make magic in the ring together, the real magical moment would come backstage after the match had concluded. In a WWE online exclusive, Escobar would catch up with Mysterio backstage – an interaction that would end with them gifting each other one of their masks. This could well be the start of a tag team between Escobar & Mysterio, or the start of a feud for WrestleMania 39 in April.

With Mysterio wanting to save his singles match with son Dominik for a retirement match, pushing in the direction of Mysterio vs. Escobar would give a potentially show stealing match on either night of WrestleMania 39 – while saving the Father vs. Son dream match until Mysterio is ready to hang up his boots for good.
Two Potential Heirs To The Spot Of Mysterio
Right now, there are two names who could lay claim to the spot that Mysterio has held in WWE for nearly two decades. While Dominik Mysterio had a rocky start to his time in the company as he was thrust into high level matches before he was ready – his recent heel turn has done a lot to help him show his true potential. With many years to go for Dominik on the WWE roster and the built in feud with his father waiting to happen – he’s likely to shoot up in popularity.
Another name is set to make their debut in WWE NXT very soon, that being Dragon Lee. At just 27 years old, Lee is already considered to be one of the best luchadores in the world, with his WWE signing being viewed as one of their best accusations in years. Lee has yet to make his debut for WWE after signing his contract, as he needs to sort out visa issues first. He’s expected to make his debut at NXT Stand & Deliver during WrestleMania weekend.
