There are few men who have had more prolific careers in professional wrestling than Stone Cold Steve Austin. The biggest star to come from WWE since Hulk Hogan, Austin had a meteoric rise during the late 90’s – taking the world by storm. He’s faced most the biggest names possible during his time in the ring – but never faced Brock Lesnar, something that Austin has come to regret.
Stone Cold Steve Austin Regrets Not Facing Brock Lesnar
During an interview with WESH 2 news, Austin was asked if there is anyone he wishes he had a chance to face in WWE. He’d respond with the following.
“That guy is Brock Lesnar. Way back in the day, I was scheduled to wrestle him in Atlanta at a television taping. The match wasn’t great as far as creative goes, so it never happened. That’s the match that got away. I have so much respect for Brock and watching him go through the evolution of becoming one of the best pros out there. To go into the MMA world and become a world champion. He’s had a heck of a journey and no one has had a career like his and his longevity has been supreme. Brock Lesnar would be my answer.”
The match in question was set to take place on Monday Night RAW as part of the King of the Ring tournament. It was a match with zero build to be given on TV, with Lesnar planned to win. Austin felt WWE was wasting a major match, and walked out as a result – never getting another chance to face Lesnar.
A Desired Match For Many WWE Fans To This Day
There is a chance that WWE can put this match together in 2023. Stone Cold returned to the ring for one more match in 2022, defeating Kevin Owens at WrestleMania 38 in Texas.
Since then, he’s been offered other matches in WWE including at WrestleMania 39, but wasn’t given enough time to properly get into shape.
Given Austin & Lesnar remain major draws for WWE, and with Austin regretting not getting this match – it could be a special attraction match for a potential PPV.
While the story about how this match originally was scrapped is too behind the scenes for WWE to reference, it wouldn’t be hard to put them in a match and get fans excited.
