Under Vince McMahon, the WWE has fully bought into using any spectacle they can to help draw in casual fans.
Hulk Hogan was the first and best at doing this as he and McMahon shared a mind for the entertainment side of the business and it was groundbreaking and changed the game.
McMahon is also known for punishing his talent if they don’t do what he wants or they cross a line.
King Kong Bundy had a falling out with him after he did a commercial in Japan that became huge and he did so without McMahon’s blessing. Bundy was subsequently buried and was reburied and ignored when he returned to the WWE in the mid 1990s.
The stories go on and on, and Kevin Nash added his own to the list when he talked about the consequences of refusing McMahon’s wishes on a recent Kliq This Podcast.
Facing Mike Tyson
Nash talked about how he was told he was going to hold the WWE World Heavyweight Championship for years, but plans changed.
“He had told me that I wasn’t going to lose the championship for years. No matter what, I wasn’t going to lose the championship for years. Then he starts telling me about this idea he had where I’m going to box Mike Tyson in Central Park and it’s for charity. He’s going on and on about this. I said to him, ‘Mike Tyson will knock me the f–k out. He could conceivably kill me.’
“I’m a boxing fan. A big motherf—er like me, he can put two or three f—ing shots, he does the fu-king old hook to the body, hook to the body, uppercut. Goodnight Irene. It’s not going to do me any favors.
“I said, ‘I’m not fu-king fighting him for less than five million dollars.’ We go back and forth. Then he clears his throat and says, ‘By the way, you’re going to drop the belt to Bret at Survivor Series.’ I said, ‘You fu–ing sat here for 45 minutes and told me this fu–ing horsesh-t about boxing Mike Tyson to fu—ing tell me that you want me to drop the fu–ing strap to Bret. Motherfu–er, you could have done that on a goddam telephone.’ Like, I don’t care. You can have it. Are you kidding me?”
There have been near countless reports on how McMahon will change things on a whim, or say one thing and do another.
Andre the Giant was reported as saying you could trust Vince Sr on a handshake deal, but not Vince Jr. How true that is depends on one’s perspective, but Nash doesn’t pain McMahon in a good way when he wanted more money to get knocked out.
