Since 2022, we’ve seen WWE take a new approach to their PPV events. With Clash At The Castle in Wales – Drew McIntyre took a staring role. Elimination Chamber, they approached Montreal with a heavy focus on Sami Zayn, and with Backlash in Puerto Rico – that focus was on Bad Bunny.
Focusing on regional stars has led to hot crowds in lesser ran areas. This approach is expected to be kept for PPV events. Money in the Bank in London, England being the next event. Now, rumours of a major event in Australia are starting – as WWE eyes the region.
WWE Eyes Australia PPV After Success In Puerto Rico
Reported through Fightful Select, WWE have reached out to representatives in Australia for the first PPV event in the region since 2018. Superstar Showdown was a major event, headlined by Triple H vs. The Undertaker. Buddy Matthews & The Iconics were the notable Australian wrestlers on the card.
Matthews won the WWE Cruiserweight Championship. Meanwhile The Iconics defeated Asuka & Naomi. Since then, WWE has developed more stars from the region – with the biggest being current Smackdown Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley.
Superstar Showdown 2018 has an attendance of 70,309 in the Melbourne Cricket Ground, which gives an idea of the demand that is found for major WWE events in Australia.
Booking a card with Australian stars like Rhea Ripley, Bronson Reed, Indi Hartwell, Grayson Waller, and more in prominent roles could see them surpass their previous attendance in the region. A Rhea Ripley main event would be expected,
This approach to PPV events is a clear success, and with WWE having a global fanbase – it’s good to see them not simply focusing on the usual spots in the United States. Other regions fans hope to see ran include India & Mexico – with plenty of stars to showcase on their roster.
Mexico in particular would be huge. Fans are wanting a Mask vs. Hair match between Rey Mysterio & Dominik Mysterio for a potential Mexican PPV event.
