While Roman Reigns has been focused on holding onto his title at all costs, the WWE has been building up a potential challenger that’s more than capable of defeating Reigns and ending his streak.
It’s nothing but rumors and speculation, but many fans believe that GUNTHER is going to win this year’s Royal Rumble, which will put him on a collision course with Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40 in 2024 in a probable title vs. title match.
GUNTHER Slated to Defeat Roman Reigns for the WWE Universal Championship at WrestleMania 40?
Given Reigns’ greed for wanting all of the gold it would be easy to play it into his character as the Bloodline continues to disintegrate around him.
With some rumors that Reigns is supposed to become a superhero face again, it seems the two are destined to face off as GUNTHER has established himself as a top, is not the top, heel on Raw.
And given his showing in 2023’s Royal Rumble where he lasted to the final entrant, Cody Rhodes, came out and earned his way to face Reigns at WrestleMania 39.
Building for the future
While Cody got the accolades on television, GUNTHER reportedly received high praise from fans and critics for his showing as it cemented him as a force to be reckoned with.
GUNTHER’s record breaking run as the longest reigning Intercontinental Champion of the 21 century has put him in elite company, and his matches are always some of the best the WWE gives us.
While he’s a monster for the mid card, the Ring General will eventually set his sights on the top prize in the WWE and the challenge Reigns presents will be something he’d relish.
Of course, a lot can change between now and then as April 2024 is a long way off, but the WWE is known for planning for the long term so it makes perfect sense that we could see a push in this direction following Survivor Series.
Earned the privilege
While there are always going to be arguments over who should’ve beaten Reigns already, they all come down to the Bloodline helping him. Imperium gives GUNTHER the numbers to counter the Bloodline, and unlike under Reigns GUNTHER suffers no infighting.
More than that, we think GUNTHER’s record setting run and presence in the ring has earned him the right to face Reigns for the top title in the land, and even defeat him.
What could add to this even more is if GUNTHER reaches the level of accomplishment that the WWE Universal title doesn’t interest him as much and he’d view it as a trinket.
This would also infuriate Reigns since his whole existence is the title, and if GUNTHER says he’ll challenge for it to restore the honor and prestige Reigns took away from the title, it all but writes itself.
