UFC lightweight Justin Gaethje is promising a barnstormer when he faces Dustin Poirier at UFC 291. Gaethje and Poirier’s rematch will headline the night, contesting the kinda-nonsense-but-kinda-legit “BMF” title. Although Poirier won their first outing five years back, Gaethje appeared on DC & RC to promise a true modern MMA classic.
“That was five years ago, I do not believe that plays a factor. I won’t watch that fight, the UFC made me watch it the other day, it’s a fun fight to watch.
Justin Gaethje Promises “25 Minutes Of Hell” At UFC 291
But, like I said, I fought like an idiot, but that is the challenge we are facing, every fight is so different every time. I fought Oliveira like an idiot, that was two fights ago. I fought the last fight perfect. I fought the fight before Oliveira perfect, against Chandler.
Every one of these is a different circumstance, a different time, it’s 25 minutes on July 29 and that’s all that matters. What’s going to happen, I don’t know.
I am preparing for 25 minutes of hell because I know I’m fighting a dog and I know that I will never quit on myself and he knows that. So, I’m sure we will be as prepared as we possibly can.”
Both Gaethje and Poirier saw their attempts to capture UFC gold fall flat. Both men had their chance at former champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, both losing to “The Eagle.” More recently, both took a run at Charles Oliveira, and Oliveira managed to finish both in back-to-back title defenses. Despite this, Dustin Poirier believes he can repeat the feat and finish Gaethje just like he did all those years ago.
“I can finish him again, 100 percent, I can finish anybody in the world at 155 pounds. I just have to be on, in the right mental space, ready to perform. It’s 25 minutes to get it done and July 29, bro, I’m going to be brilliant in there, man, I’m telling you.”
The “BMF” title might mark both fighters’ only chance at capturing a UFC belt before they retire. Poirier clearly feels that it’s worth fighting for.
“It is what it is. I’ve seen people excited about the ‘BMF’ title. I’ve seen people talking sh*t about it. To me, if you look at our track record, look at Justin’s history, look at my history. It just makes sense.
All the Fight of the Year contenders we’ve been in. He has other ones from other organizations coming into the UFC, Fight of the Year contenders. It just makes sense. This is going to be a great fight.”
It never crossed my mind that I would be fighting for a ‘BMF’ belt, but it’s awesome. I would love to hang it up in my living room.
I don’t think the ‘BMF” belt’s stupid. I like it. And it’s going to get wrapped around my waist.”
