So, with the AEW roster heading towards a brand split that appears to be harder than originally speculated, there’s the question of upcoming contracts. Who is likely to stay and who won’t be re-signed? This includes the voices of AEW broadcasting such as one Tony Schiavone.
Tony Schiavone Says He Won’t Be Heading to WWE After His AEW Contract Comes Up in 2024
Tony Schiavone has been with AEW since year one. Prior to that, he’d made a return to wrestling commentary in 2017 with Major League Wrestling. His time with the New York-based company ended as it collided with his AEW obligations in 2019. Since then, his commentary and interviews are a part of AEW’s product as much as the commentary of his partners and the action from the wrestlers.
On a recent episode of his What Happened When podcast, discussion turned to Schiavone’s AEW contract. Co-host Conrad Thompson joked that the former NWA and WCW lead commentator had a lifetime contract with the company.
When it comes to Conrad joking about Tony’s business or what his wife Lois is doing, Schiavone has to step in and correct him. There’s always the Schiavone answer and it often involves Lois. In this case, Schiavone said that his contract is up in early 2024.
“That’s a f**king lie unless my life ends by April next year. There is no guarantee that they’re going to re-sign me. That’s how I approach life: no guarantees. Klondike Bill told me one time, ‘The job is a day-to-day thing, Tony.’ That’s how I approach my life.”
With how the broadcast approach in the booth, it’s likely that Khan would like to create that same setup for AEW Collision—whether Schiavone is drafted or not. He’s in deep with the company to the point of being one of several notable non-wrestling personalities each week.
So, Schiavone could very well see a contract extension or renewal in April 2024. He would also point out that his wife Lois Schiavone really isn’t a fan of him working for WWE. Tony would punctuate his answer by saying that Lois would divorce him if he dares to entertain the idea.
