Dominik Mysterio is finally a singles champion in WWE – something which has been in the making since he joined The Judgement Day.
While initially, Mysterio was viewed as a simple tag team wrestler when paired with father Rey Mysterio, he would show some potential as a singles star as he linked up with Finn Balor, Rhea Ripley & Damien Priest. Now, he’s holding a belt familiar to Priest – the NXT North American Championship.
Dominik Mysterio Wins His First Singles Championship
During tonight’s episode of WWE NXT, Dominik Mysterio would be the latest challenger of Wes Lee. Lee had won the NXT North American Championship in a Ladder Match at WWE NXT Halloween Havoc 2022 – and would go on to defend against the likes of Carmelo Hayes, Dijak, Axiom, Tyler Bate, Drew Gulak and Dragon Lee. 11 successful defenses proved his potential as a singles star, but it all came crashing down when faced by Dominik Mysterio.
Mysterio would get some aid from Judgement Day in his victory, with Finn Balor distracting the referee, Damien Priest first trying to attack Lee, and Rhea Ripley hitting him with the Women’s World Championship.
This would result in Lee’s reign finally coming to an end – and marking the first singles championship in WWE for Dominik Mysterio. It also is unique in that Mysterio has never been part of the NXT roster, having jumped right to the main roster after his 2020 debut.
A Match With Implications For The Future Of NXT
It’s unclear if Mysterio will be a frequent face on NXT following this title victory, or if this is simply a way to get more eyes on the NXT product in 2023.
The Judgement Day has become a very popular faction in WWE, and having the NXT North American Championship on one of their members is going to help drive interest.
This also leaves the future of Lee up in the air. His time as North American Champion proved that while he was initially signed to WWE as part of a tag team, he has much deeper value. With Summerslam just around the corner and NXT call ups rumoured to follow – his time in NXT could be quickly coming to a close.
