The NXT brand of WWE has taken on various incarnations since it’s introduction in WWE. Currently, it’s a brand that helps talent get prepared for the WWE main roster – and has recently went back on the road with a fantastic set of Premium Live Events.
However, when it started – it was a combination of professional wrestling and a game show. Various rookies would be placed with established wrestlers, and be put through a series of challenges with the winner getting a contract and a title shot. This was entertaining at the time, but ended before Seth Rollins was a contestant.
Seth Rollins Talks The Lost Season Of WWE NXT
During an interview with CBS Sports’ Shakiel Mahjouri, Seth Rollins would be asked about how far his season of NXT got before being cancelled. Rollins had the following to say.
”All we did was film the pre-tape stuff, like we filmed the packages, we went to Full Sail University, and they had the cameras set up and went around you, and you got all wet and shiny, did the poses and then talked about who we were and where we came from and all that. So all that pre-production type stuff, we did all that, and then they never did the season. I think we were supposed to be season four or five? Hard to remember.
Because they did the all-female season, and they did maybe one after that, and weren’t on that. Maybe it was five. But yeah, never came to fruition. For the better, I would say. At the time, very disappointing. Obviously, we were all looking to get our feet wet in WWE. We thought NXT was gonna be the ticket, that pathway in NXT anyway, and thankfully for all of us, that didn’t happen because here we are.”
Other names planned for this season included Leo Kruger, Xavier Woods, Big E, Damien Sandow, Hunico, Bo Dallas & Konnor.
Rollins Feels His Mentor Would Have Been CM Punk
When asked who he expected to be paired with on the show, Rollins thinks that CM Punk would have made the most sense. Rollins had the following to say.
“Oh man, that would have been like 2011, 2012. At that point in my career, gosh, I would have been very closely aligned with CM Punk at the time. He would have probably been the guy if he was going to be involved with NXT that they would have paired with me based on our personality types and our upbringing.”
Punk & Rollins would team up in an NXT match, facing Kassius Ohno & Cesaro. Rollins would go on to become the first NXT Champion as Triple H took control of the brand and reshaped it into a more serious wrestling brand.
