Sami Zayn On His WWE Feud With Roman Reigns: “I’m Not The Chosen Guy, And That’s Okay”

Earlier this year, WWE had a magic moment with the rapid rise of Sami Zayn to a brief main event level. After years of fan support, Zayn was able to get a main event World Championship match in his home province of Quebec.

His inclusion in the Bloodline storyline alongside Roman Reigns put him in a perfect spot to challenge the reign of The Tribal Chief, and the crowd truly thought he would be the one to finally take Reigns down. This was not the result however, but Zayn is fine with that – he knows he’s not the ‘chosen guy’.

Sami Zayn Knows He’s Not The Chosen Guy In WWE

While speaking with Ryan Satin on the Out Of Character podcast, Sami Zayn would be asked if his loss to Roman Reigns in Montreal hurt. Zayn had the following to say.

“It was a little hard because, and I don’t think I’m being controversial in saying this, but I’m not the chosen guy, obviously. I’ve been handed a lot of opportunities, and I’ve delivered on a lot of those opportunities throughout my time with the company. I’m grateful for all of it, but clearly, I don’t think anyone would say, ‘Oh clearly, he was being positioned to be the top guy or be the most popular guy on the show.’ Obviously, that’s not the case, and that’s fine.

But I guess in the back of your head, you’re always banking on your ability to get there. Somehow or another, you just feel like you’ll get there, and then it is hard to get there. It’s almost miraculous to get there, or to get one of these organic runs that the audience sort of wills into existence. You can probably count them on one hand in the last ten years with Daniel Bryan, Becky Lynch, Kofi Kingston, and myself.”

Roman Reigns would go on to defend the belt against Cody Rhodes in the main event of WrestleMania 39 Sunday. The night before, Zayn & Kevin Owens took the WWE Tag Team Championships from The Usos in the main event of WrestleMania 39 Saturday. Reigns would go on to defend against Jey Uso in the main event of SummerSlam 2023, suffering an injury – you can read more on that here.

A wrestling fan practically since birth, who has been hooked since he got his first toy wrestling ring for Christmas as a child. Since getting access to the internet, he's watched more wrestling than he could ever remember from all around the world. It's hard to keep track of what happens in the wild world of professional wrestling, but he always tries to stay up to date. Note: No relation to Tully Blanchard of Four Horsemen fame (probably).
