Since the launch of AEW and the company being built on the Indie scene and other lesser known wrestlers from around the world, there are more opportunities for wrestlers to show off their talent.
It’s opened the door for many to step into the limelight, and it’s made mega stars out of big stars like the Young Bucks, Cody Rhodes, Kenny Omega, and Adam Page.
WWE Had Big Plans for Kenny Omega
Cody cashed in with a big deal from the WWE and was skyrocketed into the top face position as they took advantage of his increased star power from being a founder and former EVP of AEW.
The deal reportedly got others in AEW curious about going to WWE and trying to land a similar deal, and with the Elite’s contracts nearing their end with AEW it was a possibility.
But that’s not the case as the Elite have signed multi-years contracts to remain in AEW, and it’s a good move considering they all helped launch the company.
It’s also interesting since there are reports that things between them and CM Punk are worse after his ESPN interview, and many expected the toxic relationship to cause them to leave the company.
Big plans
With the deals done, it’s been reported by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that the WWE was interested in the Elite, but especially Kenny Omega.
Omega has been a top star in AEW for years and is one of the best wrestlers in the world. He got drawn into a Twitter debate a couple of years ago when a fan asked Seth Rollins at a speaking engagement about the two facing each other.
Rollins’ response wasn’t professional when he referred to AEW as not being the big leagues, but that’s expected when a wrestler is in character or is intent on defending their current home.
It also got the internet talking about the dream match and we were so close, but it’s not in the cards for the time being.
The two were compared again, though in a far less direct way when Dave Meltzer discussed them and how Omega missing time in 2022 due to injuries prevented the WWE from talking to him previously.
He also talked about how Omega was viewed as a top talent by the WWE and would’ve been treated as such.
“One person with knowledge of WWE’s interest has noted to us that while Omega was top talent who would have been used as a top guy, in the mix with the likes of Roman Reigns, Cody Rhodes, Seth Rollins and Brock Lesnar level guys, that because of long-term physical durability that they believed Rollins as the role of the best in-ring wrestler in the company had more time in that role than Omega would have.”
Durability is always a concern, especially given the house shows the WWE holds. They cut back the number of them in recent years, but the schedule is still pretty heavy.
Would Omega have thrived in WWE or did he make the better decision to stay in AEW? Let us know in the comments below.
