When it comes to legitimate wrestling skills, there has never been someone in WWE that could match Kurt Angle. An olympic gold medal winning wrestler, Angle’s exploits are what lended him to such quick success when he joined the WWE roster.
However, one man was able to come close – that being Brock Lesnar. Joining WWE in the early 2000’s as a NCAA Division 1 National Champion – Lesnar was legit as well, but not a gold medalist.
Kurt Angle Managed To Beat Brock Lesnar In Legit Wrestling Match Backstage – But It Was Close
While speaking with Sports Illustrated, Kurt Angle would reveal that he had a legit wrestling match with Brock Lesnar backstage in 2002 – after being goaded by The Brooklyn Brawler.
“We wrestled just once. It was during the day before a WWE show back in 2002. Dave Shultz taught me how to teach myself. The technique he instilled in me, that’s ultimately how I beat Brock.
Brock said he’d beat my ass. So when Brawler told me that, I said, ‘Let’s go.’ Brock was picking Big Show up, double legging him, just wrecking him–and that’s when I thought, ‘I don’t know if I can beat this kid’. But I figured, I may as well try. It was a tight match. I didn’t dominate. But I won.
There’s a big difference between a national champion and a gold medalist. I knew Brock was going to do his college wrestling with straight double legs. It was all about positioning. That’s what Dave taught me, and that’s why I hardly ever got scored on. Brock didn’t score on me.”
Fans didn’t get to see this match, but did see Angle & Lesnar many times in a WWE ring – including in the main event of WrestleMania 19. They put on some of the most technically sound main event matches in the history of the WWE Championship, making magic every time they locked up.
