Today was the start of a new era in Sports Entertainment. The merger between WWE & UFC was made official – forming TKO. This was a game changing moment for the two massive companies, and could open the door for crossover in the future.
WWE President Nick Khan is one name who is hopeful about this, and sees serious potential for MMA fighters to extend their time in the spotlight using WWE.
Nick Khan Sees Potential For UFC Fighters To Have An Extended Life In WWE With TKO
While speaking with ESPN, Nick Khan would talk about how people will remain focused on their original companies – but fighters with big personalities have a chance to get a second wind once they step out of the octagon. Khan had the following to say.
“UFC fighters are gonna stay focused on the UFC and WWE superstars obviously do something different in our ring. But you also see in the UFC people with big personalities who, once their UFC run is done, once the UFC and the fighter says, ‘Hey, maybe now’s the time to call it a day,’ could those people have a longer life at WWE, an extended life with TKO? We think so.”
Two notable examples of this working out in a big way for WWE was when Brock Lesnar returned to the ring after winning the UFC Heavyweight Championship, and Ronda Rousey making her professional wrestling debut.
While Lesnar was already established in WWE by his initial run, Rousey proved that UFC success can lead to a top star in WWE – and the formula only has room for improvement in the future.
This merger is going to change both companies as things settle – it’s simply not clear yet what possibilities lay ahead of fans.
The amount of crossovers we will see has yet to be seen, and if we will see supershows containing the best of both companies. However, this gives a clear path between companies, something that hasn’t been as clear before today.
