The man who won a Gold medal with a broken “frickin'” neck, Kurt Angle, was on the Joe Rogan Experience and spoke openly about his time in the WWE, wrestling, personal life and delved into his personal battle with addiction as well.
During his conversation with Joe, he spoke about how many times he broke his neck in the WWE, and before he wrestled Brock Lesnar at Wrestlmania, he had just broken his neck.
Unfortunately, this led to a long battle with addiction as he became more and more reliant on the painkillers to get him through the day and it wasn’t until the death of his sister by overdose that he eventually realized what he was doing to himself.
According to Kurt, he was getting over 2,000 painkillers a month, from different doctors and pharmacies as well as an illegal hookup in Mexico. He even had a calendar for when and where he could get more of these pills.
The night that his sister died, Angle claims he took 20 of his pills because he just didn’t care anymore. He passed out, but woke up the next day at 5 pm and wrestled what he believes was on of his best matches of his career. He believed his sister would have wanted him to go out there and perform, and that’s what he did.

His career was significantly altered when he was fired from the WWE because of his addiction, and while at Impact Wrestling, he found a doctor that was able to ween him off of the painkillers and get him to a healthier state.
He was at a point where he would go to sleep with 15 painkillers on the nightstand because he knew while he was asleep he would withdraw and need them when he woke up.
