It’s a new place, new face situation for Brian Pillman Jr who has gotten vignettes introducing his new name. Before, he was going by his real name—which worked. It’s familiar for wrestling fans who either followed his career or are familiar with his father. This is the case for any generational star going through WWE where their name is likely to be changed and could end up being unrecognizable unless you follow the WWE product.
Brian Pillman Jr to Make NXT Debut Soon—Gets Name Change
Obviously, merchandising and licensing is the reason for Pillman getting a name change. Also, he’d been signed to WWE since August, so they’ve had time to sit and come up with a working name. During the 10/10 edition of NXT, the vignette featured the young Pillman watching footage of his father, Flyin’ Brian.
He started by discussing how everyone had great memories of his father except for him who has been constantly reminded of him. It’s a great foundation for a heel trying to destroy his father’s legacy or one trying to make their own, a legacy be damned. Pillman Jr said he couldn’t escape his father because everyone saw him and saw Pillman Sr—it also didn’t help that he’s gone most of his career letting everyone know he is Flyin’ Brian’s kid.
Instead, he would take the last name of the “real father figure in his life” and now we have Alexis King. Of course, the name is copyrighted for WWE use. His WWE ring name is a tribute to his late sister Alexis, a former valet who debuted in 2008 and unfortunately died in a car accident the following year.
Prior to signing with WWE, Brian Pillman Jr—or Alexis King—wrestled for MLW before signing for AEW when he eventually ended up in the Varsity Blondes tandem with Griff Garrison until July 2023.
How do you like the name? Do you believe he should’ve just remained Brian Pillman Jr? What other stars should’ve kept their family name?
