During the last two Smackdowns, we noticed an interesting change in that the New Day was no longer being used when Big E and Kofi Kingston teamed together.
The first week we thought maybe it was an oversight for some reason or the graphics and commentators made a mistake, but after last week other fans noticed and it appears Vince McMahon has banned the use of “New Day” for the duo.
The report comes curtesy of Fightful as they reported that Vince has made it adamantly clear that Big E and Kofi Kingston are only to be referred to by their names and not the New Day they’ve used for years.
There were a couple of hiccups as they were still referred to the New Day on WWE’s Youtube channel, but that’s been corrected.
Even the titantron graphics listed them as New Day, but the announcers only used their names.
Another head scratching edict
This is one that has a lot of fans confused as they are the New Day to fans and have been for years. They’re one of the most popular tag teams and factions in the company so this doesn’t make a lot of sense.
But in a way, it might if Vince is intent on splitting Big E from Kofi and Xavier Woods. Woods is still recovering from an injury, so Big E was moved from Raw to fill in for the time being.
At least, that’s our assumption on what’d happening and why.
After all, reports have said it was Vince’s idea to break them up at the 2020 draft and begin building Big Es singles career that spend his WWE Championship run suffering from bad booking decisions.
If Big E’s just filling in until Woods comes back, then Vince may intend for only Woods and Kofi to be considered the New Day, and this is, in my opinion, a very bad idea given how popular the tag team is.
But Vince has shown he rarely cares what the fans think as long as he has the TV contracts coming in.
Another banned word?
There’s another thought that he wants to chance the New Day complexion entirely with a new name, new gimmick, and so on.
Kofi and Woods have stated they tried to convince Vince to turn them heels and he didn’t want to.
Maybe Big E will turn on them and go heel, and Kofi and Woods won’t want to continue using the New Day name.
It could been make the list of banned words like wrestling and wrestler, but they haven’t changed their name from World Wrestling Entertainment per se. They may only use WWE, but the word is implied.
Anyone want to guess what word or term he’ll ban next?
