Fans have been begging for the WWE to change things up for years. It’s a simple request as we tend to get the same thing week after week, show after show.
Vince has shown a stubbornness to adjust and adopt new ideas, and only did it in the late 90s when he was losing the Monday Night Wars and needed something to energize the WWE brand.
Since then, the WWE has been he dominate force in professional wrestling as it became the Disney of wrestling.
The McMahon family even made a production out of saying they’ll listen to the WWE Universe a few years ago, and they’ve shown that’s rarely the case since and it won’t change any time soon.
No reason to change
With TV ratings dropping more each year, AEW becoming a legitimate threat, and fans leaving until those left are hardcore WWE fans, it’d make sense to change things around.
Instead, Vince is reportedly happy and content with the product.
In a Q&A on PWInsider.com, Mike Johnson talked about why change in WWE isn’t coming.
“In his mind, he doesn’t think anything is wrong. The company made a billion dollars last year, so there’s a billion reasons for him to shrug off any criticisms. We are told he pushes and presents what he likes and wants and nothing else makes a dent in that vision. That’s why the shows are presented the way they are and that’s why nothing is going to change anytime soon, if ever.”
History and TV contracts
As we previously mentioned, Vince won’t change unless he’s forced to, and since there’s no direct competition for adds in their time slot like during the Monday Night Wars, he’ll be content to cash in on the WWE’s TV deals.
To make the WWE a household name, Vince focused his money on high production values in the early days and sent the recordings to TV stations around the country as cable was beginning.
In doing so, Vince was able to secure various Tv contracts and that revenue allowed him to sign big names like Hulk Hogan from other companies. By taking other companies’ top talent, it limited their ability to compete and they slowly went out of business.
It’s similar to what the WWE has done the last twenty years by poaching other companies’ talent that led to having a bloated roster but no real competition.
Given his history, it stands to reason we won’t see a change as long as Vince has his TV contracts and Peacock pays $1 billion for the WWE Network.
This raises a lot of questions about WWE’s future since no change is evident to come without being forced.
