Boxer Ryan Garcia has opened up on his mental health struggles that plagued his time in the sport.
Ryan Garcia Opens Up On His Mental Health Struggles-‘I Wanted To Kill Myself’
Ryan, for his part, decided to walk away from the sport last year when he was scheduled for a fight with Javier Fortuna. During the course of that process, it became clear that something was not right with Ryan.
Further revelations emerged which suggested that he had been suffering from anxiety, as well as depression.
These issues were based on the grounds that the star was not able to combat the stress associated with the sport, coupled with the fact that he did not have a solid support network in place.
And things had gotten so bad that Ryan contemplated the thought of taking his own life. In an interview, he said: “When I was deep in it, I didn’t think I was gonna live.
“I was so depressive and I went to bad habits. I started drinking, and I never drink, ever. But I was getting drunk all the time. I wanted to kill myself at one point.”
Ryan is not the only boxer to have suffered from mental health issues in the past. This had most notably been seen with the now Heavyweight Champion of the World Tyson Fury.
The former has been very open about his substance abuse issues, which included alcohol and drugs. This eventually led to a situation where Fury also contemplated the thought of taking his own life.
But given that he had managed to overcome those demons, Fury has now cemented himself as one of the greatest ever heavyweight champions by virtue of his backstory.
Much in the same way, Ryan has an opportunity to do the same. His professional record is very impressive with an undefeated record of 21 victories, 18 of those which have come by way of knockout.
Next up for the star is a fight with Emmanuel Tagoe in April. If he manages to come out on top of that battle, then Ryan will have thrown his name into the hat for some of the biggest fights around. We will have to see how this will play out going forward.
