The run of SW3RVE Strickland in WWE could have been so much better than it was. Aside from a short reign as NXT North American Champion, SW3RVE had not much else going on during this run. It would end with his release, just weeks after being drafted to the Smackdown brand. He hit the ground running after this, and has made impacts in New Japan Pro Wrestling and Progress Wrestling – but also looks back on this WWE run in a unique light.
SW3RVE Feels A Top Guy Shouldn’t Just Be The Best Worker
While speaking with Fightful SW3RVE would look back on his run in WWE. He feels that he helped to change the definition of how fans grade the value of an in-ring talent in the company could be. SW3RVE had the following to say.
“I want to feel like I changed the narrative of the value of an in-ring talent. There is a lot of value put behind match quality, which is good, great, amazing. We need to be good at what we do and be top performers, but there is this hierarchy that is set that, you have to meet this to be considered one of the best or top tier, and that’s not the case.
It’s like saying, if you keep the hierarchy like that, centers can’t be the best in the world, it’s always shooting guards. How we view basketball is, ‘the best players in the world are scorers.’ Generally, true, but (Nikola) Jokic just won MVP. It’s a narrative that is changing, the best scorer isn’t necessarily the best in the world. It’s the best all-around performer.
In the NFL, Tom Brady is the greatest of all-time, right? Odell Beckham Jr is the most followed. It’s not just the stats. It’s very subjective. What is a star? Is it the stats? The performance? The appeal? There are so many different elements that go into it.”
SW3RVE Strickland Is Likely To Sign With AEW
Right now, it’s been heavily rumoured that SW3RVE is set to be signed to the roster of AEW. He was seemingly set up to be the third member of the House of Black faction – a role which was instead filled by Buddy Matthews. SW3RVE is still expected to sign an AEW contract, and could be saved as a debut for one of the shows surrounding AEW Revolution.
