There’s been a lot to like about WWE this year, but there has also been a lot to hate. The company have had to increase the amount of high-quality matches due to the increased competition from AEW. However, there are still some matches that have fallen way short of what fans demand.
Some of these matches have stunk out the arenas, and have given fans a reason to tune out completely. But, which matches have been worse than most this year?
Tyson Fury vs Braun Strowman (Crown Jewel)
There have been a lot of good celebrity wrestling matches down the years, but this doesn’t fall anywhere near that category. As a Brit, it was fun seeing Fury involved in the WWE since he fits the personality criteria perfectly. However, he isn’t exactly a household name in the States, and that means that his cameo fell on deaf ears.
The match itself was better than most expected, but it shouldn’t have been anywhere near a WWE ring. It was a nightmare to book as they couldn’t hand the undefeated boxer a loss and needed to avoid Strowman looking weak. Fury struggled in the ring, and instead of playing up to the fact that Fury can box, they tried to make it a wrestling match. It was that bad that the best part of the whole match was Fury’s entrance.
Lucha House Party vs Lars Sullivan (Crown Jewel)
If there was ever a match that showcased how out of touch Vince McMahon is with the WWE audience, then this is it. Lars Sullivan arrived with high expectations because McMahon liked the look of him. However, fans had no time for him whatsoever.
This match was a disaster and revolved around Sullivan taking a little damage before getting the upper hand, and then the match ended in a DQ. It would have actually been better if it was over in one minute with Sullivan running over the Lucha House Party. This match stunk out the stadium in Saudi Arabia, but to make matters worse, it wasn’t even the worst match on the card.
The Undertaker vs Goldberg (Super ShowDown)
There wasn’t much doubt about what would be in number one spot for most fans this year. This match was head and shoulders the worst that we have seen this year and was probably the worst that we have seen in the past five years. The biggest drawing point was two iconic superstars going head to head for the first time ever. However, after the match, you quickly realised why they had never had a match before.
It was never a good idea to do this match, as both superstars have revealed that they were disappointed. Taker struggles to last the pace in singles matches anymore, while Goldberg was concussed very early on. It was a calamity of errors throughout the match and while fans in attendance may have loved it; everyone else didn’t. Taker eventually got the win, but let’s face it- who cares?
