The internet has tons of rumors about Steve Austin returning to the ring for a match at WrestleMania 38, and Kevin Owens is doing everything he can to incite the Texas Rattlesnake into returning.
For a few weeks now, Owens has been railing against Texas and insulting them as much as he can and on the February 28 episode of Raw, he ramped it up even more.
But will Austin come out of retirement for a match?
It seems unlikely as Austin’s been retired for nearly twenty years and while could wrestle it doesn’t mean he will.
Vince Russo, for one, said he doesn’t see anyway Austin will return for a match, but probably to confront Owens.
Texas sized WrestleMania
They hype the WWE is building for WrestleMania fits the larger than life mentality many have of Texas, so it’s reasonable for Austin to put in an appearance.
In fact, we expect him to show up and show Owens how the stunner is done to a chorus of cheers from the fans.
It’ll be the typical WWE moment that’ll outshine move of the other storylines and matches since they don’t develop stars like they used to.
But all of that aside, Owens and Austin share a pretty cool history. Owens said Austin told him to keep his mouth running and never stop, and it’s since become a trademark of Owens.
Passing it on
Owens talked about his encounter with Austin in 2005 when he and Sami Zayn were on their way to a show in LA on Ryan Satin’s Out of Character. Special thanks to @wrestling_mpw for the transcript.
“It’s something that defined my career, it really did. It sounds like an exaggeration to say my career would have never turned out the way it did without that meeting, but it’s really true. I met him in 2005 in an airport in Texas. Sami Zayn and I were connecting on the way to a PWG show.”
The advice was simple enough, and Owens hasn’t looked back since.
“We walked up to him, introduced ourselves and said we’re independent wrestlers on our way to California for a show. He’s super nice, very friendly. We shot he sh– a litt;e about the business and how the independents work and stuff because he obviously hadn’t been on the independent scene in a while.
“They called the flight, the first-class passenger, of course Mr. Fancy Pants is in first class, so he had to go. I go, ‘If you had one piece of advice for us, what is it?’ He goes, ‘Just keep running your mouth. Never stop running your mouth.” Then he goes, “That plancha shit will kill you,’ as he said that, he looked at Sami.
“He figured from the body types, one is more likely to plancha than the other. Then he left, got on the plane, we walked past him as we were boarding. That piece of advice, I immediately put into work.” – Kevin Owens.
We hope Austin does appear at WrestleMania. It’ll be great seeing them together as things go full circle.
