Tonights episode of Monday Night RAW doesn’t look like something anyone actually wants to watch. Filled to the brim with worthless squash matches, WWE would have likely been better off airing a clip collection of the best of 2019 instead of making wrestlers do double duty to tape the show. They also could have brought back the kayfabe award ceremony last seen in 2015, this being the Slammys.
WWE still hands out kayfabe awards down in NXT around this time of year, with a fan vote aspect added in, but should WWE bring that idea back to the main roster?
The Benefits Of Bringing Back The Slammys
Originating back in 1986, the Slammys are almost as old as Wrestlemania. They were never exactly annual, with only 13 installments taking place over the 33 years they existed, with the most frequent period being from 2008 to 2015. It carries some legacy that old fans remember. Plus award shows just make for fun low stakes fun when needed.
It would also give WWE an easy show to tape for situations like this coming Monday, where instead they taped a show worth of wrestling that no one will want to watch anyways. The WWE fanbase loves to debate on who is the best, and who had the best year. Modernizing it and taking cues from the NXT Year-End awards and making some categories fan votes would be an interesting take. But leaving it up a panel of WWE Legends to vote upon would also be interesting. It just creates easy TV, and you can build storylines off it as well, like when Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels won match of the year in 2009, and Michaels used his speech to challenge Undertaker at the next years Wrestlemania, setting the seeds for Streak vs. Career.
It would also offer a nice break and change of pace. You could even do it as a Network special, if you didn’t want it to take up the time slot from Monday Night RAW. WWE pushes out a ton of content on a weekly basis, so adding more isn’t too welcome to fans, but it would make for easy watching TV.
